Good Beer Guide selection

It is time to consider entries for the next edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

In the North Hampshire area selection of entries is based primarily on the National Beer Scoring Scheme – a system whereby any CAMRA member can log their rating of a particular pub's  beer quality.
This is done through the WhatPub website against each pub's listing.


Last year over 2000 local 'scores' were recorded and the top pubs at the end of the year make the final shortlist. Local meetings are then held in both the west and the east of our CAMRA area to ensure geographical spread. In addition there is the opportunity for any member to make separate nominations. The selection is wholly transparent  and democratic but it is up to real ale drinkers to provide their input.

The Good Beer Guide is wholly independent and no one can buy an entry unlike many other guides and neither is any pub is automatically included because it "was in last year".

As space in the book is limited, only 25 pubs in the area (around 10%) can be included, but that doesn't mean these are the only good pubs – far from it. Many more may be eligible but as with all publishing, space is a constraint.
Yes, a very small number of people do complain that their 'favourite' pub may not been included, but the question must be – did you take part and submit beer quality feedback?

So get listing those beer scores NOW – the deadline will be the end of 2017 for consideration of entries for the next edition of the Beer Drinkers' Bible.

June News from Memb.Sec.

Greetings CAMRA members,

We trust you have been enjoying al fresco drinking during the sunny weather. Your local pubs and clubs all need supporting, particularly in the villages, so go try some new ones when you are out and about....then mention the offerings/events/nice comments on our Facebook page, North Hampshire CAMRA. Keep it happy, thoughtful and beer-related, please.

Our next Branch meeting on at the Dove, Micheldever on Tuesday 27th at 7.30 for 8 to follow up on the recent AGM. It is a short walk from the station. An urgent issue is the recruitment of a Social Secretary - someone able to co-ordinate (and delegate) to enrich the Branch programme of events. A role description can be found on your member dashboard on the main CAMRA website. Since everyone likes to go to friendly drinking events we need to provide more opportunities for member involvement.

Also, as you may know we are changing magazine printers and starting afresh so our editor Jim would like to have help - we need an Assistant Beer Lines Editor, to help commission, plan articles and photos in the re-designed mag. As with everything these days a knowledge of computers and publishing programs are essential, but mostly the person will need a passion for sniffing out interesting beer-related local news and events. Voluntary only (sorry!) but with the satisfaction of contributing to an excellent award-winning local quarterly publication.

Any help offered will be welcome.

The magazine is distributed by a volunteer team but we need a Beer Lines Co-ordinator to facilitate the team distributing Beer Lines around the large Andover and Stockbridge areas. The person will need transport, will receive the mags then arrange to get them out to their team of folk who have set rounds of pubs. The aim is to try to do this within the first fortnight after each quarterly publication. You need to be organised, a good communicator and have a cheerful disposition! AGM – and Beer Festival

North Hampshire CAMRA has nearly 800 members spread across the area and holds its AGM each year to elect a Committee and set the programme ahead.

This year's AGM is on Saturday 10th June at 11.00am at The Town Mills Andover.

All members are welcome to attend.
A number of members are stepping down this year so new faces are eagerly sought.

There is to be a pre-meeting Brekkie at The Angel, Andover, at 9.45am.

Following the meeting the excellent Beer Festival at the Eagle in Abbotts Ann will be visited (bus at 12.30)
There are expected to be around 20 different ales as well as many ciders.

It is always a good day out.

May News from Memb.Sec.

There are a couple of important and hopefully, enjoyable events coming up I wish to draw your attention to. This Saturday 20th is the Red Cat Brewery Open day and some of the us will start with brekky at the Angel Wetherspoons then catch the 11.10 train to Winchester, if you wish to join us. 

Our Branch Pubs and Clubs of the Year have been voted on and presentations for 2 of the 4 winners will take place this week. On Tuesday 23rd May there is a presentation at the Basingstoke Sports and Social Club (May's Bounty) as Club of the Year (East of Region) at 7.30pm before the May Branch meeting at 8pm, which you are warmly welcome to attend. Soon after on Thursday 25th May the Pub of the Year (East of Region) presentation to The Plough at Little London will take place during an evening shared with a group of visitors from all over the South of England, called the 'Wind-Up'. They are running vintage buses to the pub and back for anyone who wishes to make a donation. Pick up at Basingstoke Station at 6.10pm to return for around 9.30pm. 
The presentations for the winners from the west of the region - Wonston Arms and Whitchurch Sports and Social Club are T.B.A. later. 

The main Branch business event of the year is your A.G.M. on Saturday 10th June, 11am at the Town Mills Andover  with a pre-meeting brekky at the Angel, Andover from 9.45 (top end of Andover High Street), Afterwards a group will travel by bus to the Eagle Inn Beer Festival (Abbots Ann) for those who wish to go along to this annual well-run event, featuring Welsh and Shropshire beers this year. Our branch is running with a very small group of active volunteer members. Recently we have lost some Beer Lines delivery folk to the outer Andover area as transport is needed. The new look free mag comes out in August then every quarter, with lots of input by our editor Jim Turner. Could you spare a few hours to help out? Rounds are usually 4-6 pubs. Contact initially. Also Jim always needs high resolution pub/beer-related pics for inclusion, plus interesting local content. Budding writers are welcome to email him about the new mag. Send to  

Finally some extra pleas - for the upcoming election, please join by lobbying local politicians to commit to supporting pubs, beer, cider makers and drinkers - the industry needs active support.

This event is supported by CAMRA and is one of the biggest beer festivals in the area.
